Abstract :
The paper describes the design and control requirements of a permanent magnet TORUS generator for use with an internal combustion engine in the auxiliary power unit (APU) of an hybrid electric vehicle. The axial flux TORUS generator has a short axial length and sufficient inertia that it can be mounted directly on the engine in place of the engine flywheel, thereby providing a very compact APU. The APU is controlled to provide a regulated power output depending on the vehicle design requirements
