Abstract :
In all optical networks, signals have to travel over very long distances on the same wavelength. During transmission, the quality of service (QoS) as measured by their Bit Error Rates (BER) will be degraded by transmission impairments such as crosstalk, which is induced by signals traversing the same optical crossconnects and demultiplexers, and it cannot be removed at the physical layer. In this work a QoS aware routing and Wavelength Assignment algorithm is presented that reduces the crosstalk effects on all optical networks and also considers dedicated path protection. This algorithm incorporate QoS information at both the routing and the wavelength assignment steps and account for dynamic crosstalk to yield better performance in terms of average BER without sacrificing blocking probabilities, as shown through simulations.
