Abstract :
A wireless radio frequency identification (RFID) based intelligent drug preparation system is developed and validated. Locations of the prescribed drugs on the drug shelf that correlated to a patientpsilas prescription in the hospital information system (HIS) are identified via RFID. During drug dispensing, pharmacists are prompted with such location information on a real-time basis such that a warning signal will be alarmed should the pharmacist picked up a wrong drug or mistakenly placing back a drug bottle into a wrong drug partition. By incorporating a digital pharmacopedia in the system, pictures and related information of the designated drugs will also be displayed concurrently with the patientpsilas drug orders. Improved drug dispensing efficiency and reduced human error can be achieved with the aid of the proposed system.
