Abstract
A comparison is made between signal levels computed using stylised refractivity profiles, chosen so as to fit measured refractivity data, with measured signal characteristics. The aim of the study is to investigate the feasibility of using analytic solutions to idealised profiles in order to simulate path dependent characteristics. In principle the physical trends deduced from such an analysis can be used to condition the behaviour of empirically based models
