Abstract
In this paper we address the problem of switching between packet-oriented and layer-oriented forward error correction (FEC) schemes for robust JPEG 2000 images and video transmission over wireless channels. Based on an analysis of the time consumption of a smart FEC scheme, we derive an optimal switching threshold for efficient JPEG 2000 codestreams protection. The derived optimal switching threshold is particularly of interest for practical implementation of FEC rate allocation methodologies in JPEG 2000 based wireless multimedia systems.
