  • Abstract
SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is a special XML-based language used to describe and draw two-dimensional scale-independent graphics on web. As an open graphics standard developed by W3C, SVG cannot only render high-quality scalable images with luxuriant contents, but also can be animated and enriched with interactivity. With support of powerful animations and interactivity, SVG is convenient to help teachers have communion with students in e-learning environments. This paper summarizes SVG´s capabilities in e-leaning environments, outlines various benefits of SVG and XML in open and distance digital learning. Besides outlining above new features of SVG applying in e-learning solutions, this paper also review some general usage scenarios and examples for SVG-based application in distance education. In addition, to solve the problem in open distance e-learning e.g. developing course wares for CRTVU (China Central Radio and TV University) educational web, a suggested open framework for SVG-based application in distance education and cost-benefit evaluation is also proposed. This paper also elaborates on the comparison between SVG with Macromedia Flash and PDF (Portable Document Format) in various facets such as opening, interactivity, flexibility and extensibility. Furthermore, the paper discusses the technologic trend for SVG-based applications in the educational field.
