Abstract :
Some applications of fuzzy logic to home electric appliances are introduced. Many kinds of fuzzy-controlled appliances have been produced in Japan. Fuzzy controllers have the advantage that qualitative knowledge of operations by experts can be used. However, it is difficult for even experts to design fuzzy controllers with their heuristic way. In order to overcome this problem, we developed a self-tuning method of fuzzy if-then rules using a learning algorithm of neural networks, named “Neuro-Fuzzy.” We introduce two applications of “Neuro-Fuzzy” to a refrigerator and a welding machine. Another important application field of fuzzy logic is image understanding. We are trying to install “eyes” in air-conditioning systems. In order to produce comfortable thermal environment, the number and positions of occupants in a room have to be identified. We introduce a segmentation and locating method of occupants from thermal images using a fuzzy clustering algorithm and “Neuro-Fuzzy.” Room temperature and wind direction can be controlled according to the identified information
