Abstract
A study of the congestion control problems in an ATM network has led to the proposal of a new policing method to monitor and control user traffic. This new policing algorithm is based on the well-known leaky bucket scheme. With some modifications, different levels of quality of service (QoS) requirements in terms of burstiness and cell delay that users defined for different classes of service can now be related to the cell level control exercised by the leaky bucket scheme. Through simulation, the effect of this new multilevel control leaky bucket scheme is studied, evaluated and compared to the conventional leaky bucket scheme in terms of average cell interdeparture time, cell delay, burstiness of traffic at the output and the potential cell loss rate when the spacing defined in the spacer and the token generation rate are changed
