“Cooperative security”: a model for the new enterprise

Enterprise security solutions no longer come “one-size-fits-all.” The prospect of universal and virtually free connectivity via the Internet is driving a profound change in the business requirements for any enterprise-wide security architecture. The authors introduce the concept of “cooperative” security-an amalgam of shared and public key systems-and its application in the design of Windows NT 5. The core principle behind this new way of looking at security is that clients, servers, and administrators must adapt and play different roles in the evaluation of trust decisions based on changing security contexts
