Abstract :
The basic performance limits of distributed-control local-area networks (LANs) are discussed, and some important research problems are pointed out. Two important obstacles discussed are: important available transmitter power, and performance of the medium-access strategy. These two limitations, especially the latter, can restrict network throughput to values far below the simple fiber capacity
