Abstract
This paper proposes three virtual cell area (VCA) determination schemes while considering different subscriber mobility patterns. The VCA creation is supported under a new cellular architecture based on ATM backbone which presents certain advantages in a microcell environment. Both fixed and adaptive strategies are described. The impact of the proposed schemes on network signaling and resource utilization is investigated
