Abstract
Summary form only given. We have studied the micropost microcavity modes using first-principles numerical simulation. These methods have reproduced the quality factors and lifetimes observed. We have also used these simulations to optimize the design of the microcavities. We have shown that there is the possibility of simultaneously obtaining very high quality factors and low mode volumes in this system, which should allow for the observation of novel physical effects.
