Abstract :
A compact architecture of a digital frequency synthesizer for a GSM intermediate frequency up/downconverter is presented. The synthesizer is capable of generating frequencies from 54 to 87 MHz with 200 kHz spacing. The area-efficiency of the system is based on the utilization of the properties of signals with absolute periodicity. The system provides 16-bit sine and cosine outputs with a spurious-free dynamic range exceeding 100 dB, A VHDL-description of the system was synthesized using a 4-metal 0.35 μm n-well CMOS technology. The size of the design is 1100 gates
