Abstract :
The issues and technology problems specific to multichannel applications of coherent technology are reviewed, such as network topology, loss limitations, laser linewidth requirements and frequency stabilization, polarization issues, local oscillator tuning range, receiver crosstalk performance limits, and levels of integration. Although worldwide attention is now focusing on these issues, significant advances are required in each of these areas before multichannel coherent lightwave systems can be considered for practical applications.<>
