Abstract :
In this paper we establish relationships between static bifurcations of a dynamical system and solutions of a constrained optimization problem, in which the equilibrium equations of the system appear as equality constraints. The results obtained apply to any system of ordinary differential (and possibly algebraic) equations. Application of these results to electrical power systems is discussed. The relationship between loadability limits and bifurcation points is examined and an illustrative example is given
