Abstract :
Growth in mobile communications continues at an unprecedented pace. Within the UK alone there are now over 2 million customers on the four mobile networks, almost twice as many as in the previous year, and this is a trend that is reflected worldwide. In the light of such demand this paper reviews the emergence of the second generation systems now in service as a step towards the vision for third generation mobile systems and considers the convergence of fixed and mobile network service offerings
