Abstract :
Calculating the stray losses of electrical machines has always been a difficult task. The nature of the problem is well understood-the problem is three dimensional and requires the solution of complex electromagnetic equations which is demanding of modem computer architecture and software. As advances in computer technology are inevitable solutions to such difficult problems are coming to light. This paper describes how three-dimensional finite element models of complete end regions of turbo-generators were constructed to determine the losses induced in stator clamp plates (also known as stator pressure plates). The calculations were backed up by the testing, described below, of machines under various load conditions. The calculated losses of various types of plates were compared in order to yield cost reduction opportunities from these studies.
