Abstract :
Rain prediction is attempted through simultaneous measurements of backscattered parameters through sonic echosonde and atmospheric temperature by sensitive temperature sensors. The setups have been operated at Guwahati where rainy days persist for about 8 months. The paper examines the backscattered echoes from sodar for short term (a few minutes to 2/3 hours) rain predictions and describes features like (i) rise in the height of the ABL, (2) break in the ABL height and (3) development or wavy structures in echograms as rain predictors. The sensitive temperature recorder output reflects (i) the increase in the negative temperature gradient and (ii) the development of unduality features in the gradient prior to a rain event. These characteristics have been defined as the rain predictor parameters. It is observed that in 60% of the cases the prediction can be made
