Abstract
The reported research tried to address an unresolved issue of how the department status affects its effectiveness by the survey data from 26 Chinese SOEs. This study shows that the effect of the sample´s background variables on the status and effectiveness of departments were not significant, and the status and effectiveness of department were the `social reality´ with a collective consensus. The organizational nature and the hierarchy level have significant influence on the department status. Finally, there was a significant positive correlation between the status and effectiveness.
