Message from the General Chairs

The third edition of the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Systems Engineering (SBESC) was held in Niteroi/RJ, Brazil from 4-8 November 2013. SBESC is an initiative of the research community originally associated with three events, the Operating Systems Workshop (WSO), Embedded Systems Workshop (WSE) and Real-Time Systems Workshop (WTR). Acknowledging the strong synergy between these three areas, and also motivated by the fact that the design of computing systems is an increasingly multidisciplinary task, since 2011 the three workshops are being organized in a single event and location, allowing for the information exchange. In this third edition, the symposium counted with the inclusion of another related event, the Brazilian Conference on Critical Embedded Systems (CBSEC). This edition had a total of 96 submitted papers for review, with work written in English and in Portuguese. 50 papers have been accepted in full length for publication, and other 24 accepted as extended abstracts for presentation in a poster session. We had accepted papers from Argentina, Brazil, France, Italy, Peru and Portugal. The program also contained five keynotes, including four international guest speakers and two industrial talks, and a students´ embedded systems competition sponsored by Intel. This is clear evidence that SBESC is gaining more international visibility, and fulfilling its mission of fostering networking and discussions among researchers, students and professionals of the field of computing systems. These IEEE Proceedings contain only the 26 full papers and 10 extended abstracts written in English.
