The author argues that, from the size and complexities of tunnels and their occupancies, frequently the only way of achieving a satisfactory fire safety is by means of a `fire engineered solution´. In tunnels, as with other complex structures, the main component for fire safety will be the management of such issues and the continuing programme of training and maintenance of the systems installed
