Abstract :
The development of radio relay systems with frequency re-use of orthogonal polarisations has requested the extension of the existing propagation channel models in order to take into account the transmission characteristics of the atmosphere in both polarisation planes. A general approach has been developed in order to characterize this particular propagation channel considering every possible relevant effect due to both propagation and antennas. Moreover, measurements on a dual polarised channel have been performed on a terrestrial link and the most relevant results are presented. The main purpose of the article is to examine some simulated results on the channel model in order to investigate the depolarising effects of the antennas and the atmosphere separately. It is shown that very similar conclusions can be also reached from experimental data, proving that the basic assumptions of the model have physical evidence
