Abstract :
High voltage stator winding insulation in modern rotating machines has a high degree of resistance to erosion by partial discharge but on-line monitoring of partial discharge activity can give useful early warning of physical degradation processes which could lead to premature insulation failure if not detected in time. Well defined changes in slot discharge pulse pattern have been shown to characterise the progression of physical damage due to movement of coil sides in the stator slots
