Abstract :
The underlying principles of conventional partial discharge detection have been elucidated. These principles are shown to depend on the phenomenon of electricification by electrostatic induction. A discussion of this phenomenon enables the circuital aspects of partial discharge detection to be examined. It is concluded that, with reference to the determination of the maximum value of the induced charge, one should in normal test situations record the voltage transient rather than the current transient as this latter transient must be integrated to achieve the same result
