Abstract :
It is assumed that a planar electromagnetic wave propagates in a single direction in a linear, isotropic, time-invariant (stationary) multilayered media. The resulting wave equation can be represented by coupled first order partial differential equations in terms of right going (W/sub R/) and left going (W/sub L/) wave functions, where the right going direction is in the positive x-direction and the left going direction is in the negative x-direction. Three methods (forward, backward and central differences) are assumed in discretizing the couple partial differential equations resulting in three different transmission parameter lattice models for each point of interest (x,t). From each transmission parameter model, a scattering lattice model is produced. Using the derived scattering lattice models, inverse scattering via the layer-peeling technique is employed to determine the dielectric constant of each layer of materials. Comparative results for particle boards and for polyethylene slabs are presented.
