Abstract :
Economic considerations have dictated for many years that remote locations are fed by overhead power lines, and this is likely to continue into the future. Consequently the power system is vulnerable to external influences and this results in the need for pole mounted auto-reclosers to give improved continuity of supply and protection against transient faults. This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of the various communication systems (i.e. SCADA, power line carrier and radio controlled systems) currently under discussion by the regional electricity companies within the UK. It further describes the possible use of an `expert´ auto-recloser software system, in preference to traditional directional fault relays, to allow automatic circuit reconfiguration, dependent on current system status, ensuring maximum supply continuity in the event of a permanent fault
