Abstract :
One of the key growth areas in the field of communications is RF and microwave. Traditionally these fields have been associated with various forms of radio and TV broadcast, and military applications. The continuing growth in mobile telephone technologies, wireless PABX, wireless LAN, satellite receivers and low power radio has significantly changed this picture. Lightning transient damage to transmitter and receiver equipment is on the increase in line with the growth of installations. This paper specifically discusses damage to RF systems and possible solutions. By the use of good, well established lightning protection, bonding, and earthing techniques, one can protect a site against lightning, however transient overvoltage damage may still occur. Calculations can help to determine if transient protection is required. Differing protection devices are available with varying RF and transient performance
