Abstract :
A four quadrant switching amplifier rated at 20 MVA and with a voltage response time of 25 μs depending on circuit conditions, has been designed, built and tested. Five GTOs are connected in parallel in each arm of a bridge circuit to produce an output capability of ±2 kV and ±10 kA. The purpose of the amplifier is to study the control of plasma current disruptions in a Tokamak fusion experiment and this means it only needs to be rated for short (<100 ms) current pulses. Comprehensive monitoring is provided and seventy signals are monitored at 50 μs intervals
