Abstract :
The trend of recent years to reduce the weight and size of power converters resulted in increase of switching frequency. The standard power devices for medium and high power applications are IGBTs and MOSFETs. Due to use of several techniques to decrease switching losses, the space and weight limitation of modern power converters are conduction losses. Although the switching times of IGBTs are worse than those of today´s MOSFETs, applying them in resonant power converters with zero-current switching causes a reduction of switching losses almost to zero. The lower forward drop of the IGBT is the major advantage against the MOSFET. The paper presents an approach to IGBT based power converters realized as a 15 kW DC/DC power converter, operating at 100 kHz. The obtained overall efficiency of 97% promises further development in weight and volume reduction
