  • Abstract
This paper presents the result of antenna gain measurement and the feasibility of up-link polarization diversity for a cellular system at 900 MHz. The measurements were made by transmitting radio signals from a hand-held mobile terminal with a whip antenna, carried by a person in different relative positions to his body. The measured correlation between the V- and H-polarization components was less than 0.3. The received signals at the base station indicated that the H-polarisation component was generally stronger than that of the V-polarisation, since the handset was held in a tilted position from a vertical line, which was common for the normal hand-held users. The signal strength received by an orthogonal base station antenna rotated by 45 degrees around its boresight axis was also measured. The measured correlation coefficient in this case was slightly greater than that of V- and H-polarisation. The configuration and the received power levels were somewhat balanced at both ports. From the above, it may be concluded that polarization diversify would be effective in such an environment as cellular systems serving the areas where the use of hand-held terminals is dominant.
