Abstract
The design of multistage block codes using known tabulated codes is presented for efficient encoded modulation schemes. With the use of the best known binary block codes of lengths less than or equal to 128, it is possible to achieve very high coding gains with multistage decoding. Besides, great flexibility can also be achieved by allowing bandwidth expansion in the interval [1, m/(m-1)], where 2m is the number of signal elements in the modulation system. Finally, an asymptotically optimum decoding algorithm is presented which can be designed with the use of known (binary) unidimensional decoders. As a result, multilevel block encoded modulation can be implemented with low complexity decoders
