Abstract :
The allocation of slots or link-capacity assignment for throughput maximization in emerging synchronous time-division-multiplexing (TDM)-based networks is considered. Taking into account the increasing disparity between the very high speeds of optical communication and the current capabilities of the switching nodes, a communication model is presented, targeted towards preventing congestion from occurring at the intermediate switching nodes due to insufficient buffer space or switching capacity. The proposed model is based on limiting the number of messages the switching node is required to handle in any given time slot. To maximize throughput in these networks, a linear programming solution is presented. The approach is unique in accounting for end-to-end traffic and network routing in the solution.<>
