Abstract
A discussion of interferometric noise arising in a fibre/radio network providing for the broadcast of very narrow linewidth wave signals is presented in terms of BER and power penalty. We use a rigorous formulation based on the modified Chernoff bound which provides an accurate upper bound on the BER. We also compare results given by this approach with the Gaussian approximation and identify conditions for which the Gaussian statistics can be applied with confidence.
