Abstract :
A generalized orthogonal series expansion should reflect the natural modes of a signal. In doing so, the transform becomes precise and useful. The most precise transform is the Karhunen-Loeve (KL) transform. In this paper wavelets are are analyzed for their appropriateness as KL transforms. It is shown that optimum filters for detection of signals in noise can be designed adaptively using an arbitrary wavelet basis
