Abstract :
Multibeam or "smart antennas" are needed to increase the coverage and consequently the cell size of the base stations for Personnel Communication Systems (PCS). Multibeam antennas provide increased gain, while still providing coverage over the entire cell. The microstrip patch antenna is a logical choice for this application because in addition to meeting the electrical specifications, the antenna is flat in appearance, and is capable of dual polarisation operation. The patch antenna can also be built with relatively low weight and cost. A 20 dB aperture coupled patch antenna has been demonstrated.
