  • Abstract
This paper describes an optimized ATM-PON based FTTH access network to provide residential subscribers with full services. The FTTH (fiber to the home) is a final target to support voice, data and video communication to and from the home. Up to now, a major obstacle to the deployment of FTTH has been the expensive cost of the optical module and fiber. The PON (passive optical network) architecture provides a common platform towards achieving a cost effective optical access network including FTTH. In addition, the ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) is the basic transport mechanism of the B-ISDN (broadband integrated services digital network) which offers flexibility in terms of service transparency and bandwidth allocation. We propose an optimized architecture of an ATM-PON based FTTH access network to provide residential subscribers with full services economically
