Abstract :
The replacement of existing motors to increase capacity and improve reliability requires coordination between the users, manufacturers, and driven equipment suppliers. Meeting today´s standards such as API 541 and very restrictive modifications to API 541 requires technical processes in design and manufacturing that were not available when most of these older existing motors were built. In many cases, replacing existing motors and associated driven equipment to increase capacity will require increased horsepower mounted on the original foundations with a minimum of rework at the job site. Foundation rework is normally performed during a turn around when the cost for lost production is high. Up front planning helps insure a minimum amount of rework during the change out of the existing motors. Original foundation and motor drawings may not be accurate, therefore it is extremely important to determine that the original equipment interfaces all are known prior to designing the new motors.
