Abstract :
The paper summarizes the results of a joint effort between CECOM and MITRE. The effort focused on evaluating communication protocols as a means for battlefield digitization. Preliminary observations are made on the effectiveness of MIL-STD-188-220 as the standard protocol for CNR nets. This paper identifies key features impacting network performance and poses recommendations for further investigation. Hybrid voice and data networks, internetworking, and their impact on performance is also addressed. Some of the proposals are tentative and cannot be fully evaluated without the benefit of modeling and simulation (M&S). M&S can be used to optimize system parameters and estimate the impact of recommended changes to system performance. Accordingly, recommendations are given for follow-on M&S activities
