            Abstract : 
We review recent developments of novel hybrid photonic-integrated devices consisting of AlGaInAs/InP electroabsorption modulators and a four-arm silica-on-silicon planar lightwave circuit optical interferometer. The device is format-agile and capable of generating various optical modulation formats, including spectrally-efficient formats such as quadrature-phase-shift-keying. We discuss the device technology platform and the device applications to 80/100 Gb/s optical transmission.
