Abstract :
Limits on the rate of reliable communication over multipath fading channels are presented. An idealized channel model is considered first in order to determine the loss due to amplitude fading. The requirement of channel estimation is demonstrated through calculation of limits for channels in which the state of the fading process is not completely known. Loss incurred due to the limitation of practical channel estimation schemes is determined. The particular methods of channel estimation considered are pilot tone extraction, differentially coherent detection, and the use of a pilot symbol
