Abstract :
Wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) has been proposed as the radio access technology for 3G mobile communication systems. It provides the ability to deliver packet based multimedia services between the base station and the mobile device. Various studies have shown that major restrictions on system capacity and congestion occur at this air interface due to the limited transmission resources. Several papers have suggested fixed resource allocation schemes to allocate capacity among all users. This paper presents a method for dynamic sharing of resources and a call admission control scheme to control congestion. Our approach involves the use of a threshold based buffer management technique for stochastic scheduling of downlink transmissions. It takes advantage of the bursty nature of packet arrivals to reallocate system resources from users with low instantaneous requirements, to users with greater resource demands. Results show the possibility of significant improvement in system capacity.
