Abstract
Toyota hybrid system (THS) is used in the current best-selling hybrid vehicle on the market - the Toyota Prius. This hybrid system contains a power split planetary gear system which combines the benefits of series and parallel hybrid vehicles. This paper first develops a dynamic model to investigate the control strategy of the THS power train. An equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) is developed which is based on instantaneous optimization concept. The dynamic programming (DP) technique is then utilized to obtain a performance benchmark and insight toward fine-tuning of the ECMS algorithm for better performance
