Abstract :
Measurements of attenuation in the VHF-band through coniferous forests in southwest Sweden are presented, indicating that the forest canopy causes a loss of about 1.5 dB, irrespective of stem volume (from 270 to 460 m3/ha). The variation of attenuation with frequency and polarisation has also been investigated, and found to be in line with predictions using Foldy´s approximation for the mean field, i.e. the attenuation due to scattering loss from trunks is higher for vertical than horizontal polarisation, and increases with frequency
