Abstract
This paper introduces the concept of mapping code bits onto orthogonal channel links of different quality according to their importance for decoding. The applicability of this concept is shown with the gain in decoding performance using a punctured parallel concatenated convolutional code (PCCC) and OFDM transmission over a fading channel. For this application, strategies are proposed which require minimal signaling, and highly punctured codes are found to yield greatest improvement. The proposed mapping concept is combinable with other link adaptation techniques.
