Abstract :
In designing video-on-demand (VoD) system, two major technical issues are focused on both to reduce the viewer´s waiting time maintaining a given bandwidth allocation and the client´s buffer requirements. In this paper, we propose a new uninterrupted staircase-staggered broadcasting [USSB] method which has a simple structure and substantially improved VoD efficiency. In addition, the USSB method offers an uninterrupted video display service. The numerical results demonstrate that the viewer´s waiting time of the USSB method is nearly close to the existing staircase broadcasting method. The client only needs to buffer 20% of a playing video when the video dividing coefficient is 4. The maximum buffer requirements of this method can be intentionally controlled by adjusting the short front part of a video size. In this paper, the USSB method is introduced in detail and is analyzed with both analysis and simulation.
