Abstract :
The Military Communications Electronics Board has sponsored a super high frequency demand assigned multiple access (SHF-DAMA) standard which defines a communications protocol providing for controlled satellite access on demand. As a stepping stone toward implementing this SHF-DAMA system, the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) is currently developing a prototype DAMA system using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment to support a USACOM pilot network. This DAMA implementation uses personal computers (PCs) communicating over a control channel on the satellite to configure satellite modems via their remote control ports. With this prototype system, an operator located at any node can specify a request-for-service, and subject to availability of bandwidth and power, the system will automatically establish the required satellite links
