Abstract :
Summary from only given. Ultrafast (UF) and deep UV F/sub 2/ lasers both drive strong photosensitivity responses that yield useful refractive-index changes in the range of 10/sup -4/ to 10/sup -2/. The UF lasers produced a larger overall refractive index, simply because higher average power was available in a small focal volume than for the excimer F/sub 2/-laser beam. However, the overall efficiency of generating similar waveguide structures was nearly identical for both laser approaches when the refractive-index change was normalized by the laser power and the scanning speeds.
