Abstract
Service availability is a critical concern in selecting network resilience mechanisms. To get a meaningful and accurate evaluation, it is thus important to use a common fair metric. In this paper, we propose a classification of service unavailability refined by different contributors. These contributors are orthogonalized so that they can be identified separately and used as common metrics for fair evaluation. A comparative study is made based on a real network and operational data, for a shared path protection scheme versus rerouting. Some important insights are also obtained, which may be used to guide network design and engineering.
