Abstract :
A technique for estimating monthly oceanic rainfall rate from Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) measurements has been in use for over ten years. A modified version of this algorithm is applied to the data collected by the TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI). Two years of SSM/I and TMI rainfall data (January 1998 to December 1999) are compared. The mean differences between TMI (version 5 data) and SSM/I rain estimates are typically less than 5%. The differences are discussed in the context of radiative transfer calculations and the rainfall estimate algorithm
