Abstract
This paper considers an ad hoc network in which it is assumed that each node estimates its position by measuring the distances to its neighbor nodes. We evaluate the energy consumption in the network during the measurement process and find a transmission strategy, in terms of the transmission power and the packet transmission rate, which minimizes the total energy consumption of the network while achieving certain accuracy in the distance estimations between pairs of nodes. An evaluation of the sensitivity of this strategy with respect to errors in the distance estimations is also performed.
